‼️ New entry rules for the EU and Latvia: key things to know

From October 12, 2025, the European Union is introducing a new border control system called EES. The essence: biometric entry and exit records instead of passport stamps. When crossing the border for the first time, you will need to provide fingerprints and a digital photo. The system will centrally track days spent in the Schengen zone (90/180 day rule).

Key information for Latvia - separate entry requirement: the country has introduced its own advanced requirement, which is already in effect (since September 1). To enter, you must submit a preliminary online application at least 48 hours in advance. Application portal: https://eta.gov.lv.

The form requests information about your route, purpose of trip, and details about past service in government agencies. Ignoring this requirement or providing incorrect information entails a fine of up to 2,000 euros and is grounds for entry denial. This applies to third-country nationals who do not have a Latvian visa or residence permit. Exceptions: Citizens of EU, NATO, OECD, EEA countries, Switzerland, and Brazil are exempt from this obligation.

When planning trips, both factors must be considered: the pan-European EES starting in October and the already active Latvian portal.
